The Brain and its myths!

Hi, today I´m going to explain things of the brain.

In the world exist very much myth about the Brain and this produce confusion at the people. Especially in those who have a little access to information.

The brain has the control of the human; the behavior, the thoughts, the physiologic process and all body functions, is thank at the brain.

Every day, the medicine have evolved and have achieved refute some misleading information about the capabilities and functioning of this vital organ.

Between the myths exist the following:
- Excessive drinking does not kill neurons, but can reduce the size of the brain and cause damage to health.
- A blow to the head does not cure the amnesia, unlike
- That the left half of the brain is not "rational" is false, and that the dominant hemisphere of the brain and is responsible for verbal functions of humans.
- The mood of them is not more variable than theirs, changes in mood of women are remembered as much for them as men.
- The brain is like a computer, the brain consists of millions of neurons that send electrical signals to the body. It does not work like a computer.
- The blind can’t hear better, the body can not replace a body, so the brain does not develop a sense of magic missing, it needs exercise and adaptation.
- Listening to Mozart does not make a baby smarter, the "Mozart Effect" is false.
- Vaccines do not cause autism or any developmental disorder permanent and profound.
- The exterior folds are not related to intelligence, only due to skull size.
- It is true that we only use 10 percent of the brain, but the simple, menial activities require that you use only a small portion of the brain.

Sex: it all?

Moral or....

free sexualy?
We live in a world where sexual images once deemed explicit are used to sell everything from chocolate to soap. But what effect does such content have on public morale and all, silent, tired of a culture dedicated to excess. In 1949, it prohibited all those things that they had relation with sex, especially those of homoxesualidad or immorality of any kind. The ban was lifted 14 years later and created the group lost virginity. Sex is the syllable that hooks you, but the really vital word is "sex." It is a collision between the idea of social communication and private intimacy, but it means the conversation and penetration.Since then, sex has become progressively more open. The images that have been considered obscene two generations ago, now extended to 10 feet high on billboards. Everything from chocolate shower gel is sold with the implication that gives almost orgasmic pleasure for the consumer. Each sentence of the act, part of the body that are now taboo representation of free expression and free from shame. But there are still some blame. You never see an erect penis on primetime television. The claim that children under 18 are not allowed to see certain films remains curiously confirmed. This is a new culture war over the boundaries of sex in public. Liberals do not feel comfortable with words like "modesty", "decency" and "discretion" when used in the context of sex. They smell of piety-minded. But, if not used as a cover for repression, which could describe the real virtues. At least there must be some way to a liberal society with sex value instead of simply hanging a price tag on it.In conclusion I think that any excess could be extremely good.

"Dealing with the stress at the university"

Hello everyone! Today I´m going to talk about "Dealing with the stress at the university"

First, the definition about stress:  Stress is a term in psychology and biology, and  It refers to the consequence of the failure of an organism to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats, whether actual or imagined. We all experience stress in day to day life. In small doses it keeps us energized and interested. In large doses, and if left untreated, stress may become anxiety and be harder to deal with alone.
I feel that if I have a bad grade ruin my future and this is very horrible! However some people are not affected by the terrible stress...In my opinion, to overcome stress we need to balance academic demands and the social demands of college. Socializing and being surrounded by positive people is an important aspect of overcoming stress. It helps to have real supportive people that you like a lot in your life who want you to succeed, especially during finals. There are several strategies that will help us to cope with stressful situations. First, we have to learn to manage our time wisely. Second, we have to set priorities and make the most of our opportunities as a student. Last, we have to learn to say "no".

After all, college students have a lot of stress. There's no denying it, but college is what we make of it. If we stay focused and balance our life, we'll feel much more relaxed and healthier when it's time to wear our cap and gown. Now, that's an achievement we have earned for life!

Why obstetrics?

Hello everyone! Today I´m going to talk about "Why obstetrics?"

In my case, at first really  I wanted to study nursing.. a career related with health.  Before postulate for to study (after PSU) i didn’t know what put in first option: nursing or obstetrics because i really like the related with babies, pregnancy.. and also help  old people with different problems … so i asked to my parents to give me advices .. but they said me that i should choose that i really liked.. so i put in first option nursery and then obstetrics.

When i saw that i stayed in Obstetrics i didn’t feel bad, i felt so satisfied. But now , after to really know what do midwifes, i feel so sure about my decision. I think that this career is for me because the focus of it is the pair: mother-son, the relation in my opinion, more important in the life of everyone, the obstetrics are dealing with the care of women and their children during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period,  the midwife monitors the progress of labor,  performing vaginal examination, accelerate the progress of labor by infusion of the hormone oxytocin, provide pain relief, the midwife accompanies physically and psychologically to the mother, imaging is another important way to monitor a pregnancy, this is done to predict problems with the mother; confirm that a pregnancy is present inside the uterus; estimate the gestational age; determine the number of fetuses and placentae; evaluate for an ectopic pregnancy and first trimester bleeding; and assess for early signs of anomalies; in the postnatal the infant's health is also monitored, so I feel so happy working with them, and obviously with all family (father, sons, grandfathers, etc).

Also in the past year we went to hospital and other health centers for practice, so i knew what will we do in the future, and i liked so much.

What is the experience of the students in a course of English?

In a year complicate, we have has that make very much which and one this they is the English course. This course has been of great importance for the student of the medicine faculty of the University of Chile, but this course hasn’t been good for all students, because is very complicate and causes problems for them. Each love learn, in special when this learn is for them carrier and them professional future. For this motive they consider that this course is very important for them, but they don’t understand anything about English.

The principal problem in the English course is a listening test; to great percentage of the students of the English course have problem for understand the pronunciation of the people that protagonist this conversation in English and the conversation is very fats, therefore is a factor very important, because speak fast and understand little is a factor for that they can’t learn the context of the conversation. They exist sometime the frustration in the students and a lack of motivation to continue studying.
The second problem that has the student whit this is a long time that have take this course and too that is an obligatory course. Is important to say that very much person has interest in that first time, but with the over the years it has become very tiring. Too the requirement have increased and this factor produce unconcern for the course because exist other courses in them carrier.

The third problem is the distance that exists between these two faculties. First in the faculty of Independencia (medicine north) in the morning there are classes, which are very strenuous and very long, usually last all morning. Then comes lunch, but this time it is used to travel from one faculty to another and lunch must be swallowed very quickly by students. It also creates an extra expense for passenger transportation.

In conclusion, the English could be much more dynamic and less frustrating if the listening test the players were our own teachers, because it is easier to understand. Also the time of study of English should be distributed in better shape, but my opinion is that all other courses should be better coordinated. And finally, the classes should be in the faculty north, where students have the highest number of classes, or just get the transfer of students to faculty, so at least they can save passenger transportation.

That´s all.

See you them!!!

Levonogestrel: It is effective?... 11/09/2010

Hello, today I comment about the class of the last Thursday. This class was about the “Postovulatory effects of the Levonogestrel in emergency contraception”.

The levonogestrel is the active principle of emergency contraceptive or “morning- after pill”.
The doctor Carlos Valenzuela explained that the levonogestrel is effective, but always to be used at the right time. He said there was a period which is name as fertile window period, which comes days before and few days after ovulation. And that in these days women are most likely to get pregnant. It is this period should be used when the action of this emergency contraceptive. However, he said that through statistical studies had shown that levonogestrel was effective, but as an anovulatory, then this method would be effective only after the sexual act, if the ovulation has not occurred. The effectiveness of this method is over 50%, but during or after ovulation and would not be effective as a contraceptive.

Then we can say that using this method or recommend, would be strictly necessary know very well the ovulatory cycle of the woman who recommend the method and know our own cycle, because otherwise you run the risk of having a unwanted pregnancy.

Dr. Valenzuela said that this method is very good, but the bad thing about this method is that it increases the probability of ectopic pregnancy, especially if used after ovulation.

Well, I think that this topic is very important and interesting for my future profession as a midwife.

Goodbye, you have a very good holiday and his incredible bicentennial celebration.

The problem in the health treatments on different countries... 11/09/2010

Hi, today I´m going to talk about the different that exist in de world and this issue focused primarily on health care, because the day, Tuesday 7 of the September, my group of English classes and me, saw a documentary film, about this topic.

In my assessment there are huge differences from one country to another, as to the importance they give to health.

In the report the first stories about people who had accidents in U.S. In this country, health authorities are not interested in the integrity of the health of people, only care about the hospital services are paid, they do that the person have to choose between heal or not, because if people have not money can not heal ailments or diseases.

The second country featured in the movie was Canada. Health in this country is free, every time a person has health problems, assists the hospital and is served free, and only important to the quality of life of people.

Then talk about France, but right now I must be honest and decided that I did not understand anything of that they were talking about in this part as they did not understand their System of organization.

In contrast to the reality or our country, Chile´s health care is among a middle ground between Canada and France, as though these GEH (Explicit Guarantees on Health), although these is no such a program to help people that need improving for common things such as accidents or illnesses that are nor within this health program.
Well… That´s all.

My favourite book!!!... 24/06/2010

Hello! Today I going to talk my favourite book, which is “City of the Beasts”, the author Isabel Allende.

The story is about a boy about 15 years of age (Alexander Cold), that travel where his paternal grandmother (Kate Cold), to New York, because his mother had cancer and could not longer care about him or his sister. He did not get along with her grandmother because she was afraid. Her grandmother was a writer of the “International Geographic”, which traveled to the Amazon with his grandson. Here begins the story, where they begin to interest in the Amazon jungle. Here, Alexander meets a girl (Morgan) and they become friends.

Alexander and Morgan are kidnapped by Indians, who taught many things, and with these new realities and uncover an unknown world.

Well just tell them there, because it is a very interesting book, which reveals the mystical world of injustice and corruption of those who will do anything for money, even to kill for money,
abusing their authority and violating the rights of the innocent.
This book I read in the summer and it is one of the best. Although I must admit that I love Isabel Allende's books, I find it an excellent writer.

Now I hope to read "The Kingdom of the Golden Dragon" and "Forest of the Pygmies", both books by Isabel Allende. These are the continuation of

the first book, but for now I'm a little short of money if you wait until I graduated from obstetrics.

That's all for now, although I would tell you more, but I think is more interesting than what you read.
I hope your visits.

Goodbye and good luck.

My experience in English class... 30/06/2010

Hi, today I am going to talk about my hours in the English class.

Well, I thing that the English is very important, however I dislike me. Yet I don’t understand fine, in special in the listening, because the people that speak in the recording is very rapid and my brain is very slow for the English, I remember one word for minute and they speak to the light velocity. Also my English little fluid still and I fell much shame when I have that to read. In the blog I am long time writing, because I don’t know how write in the right way.

I believe that English is very complex for me, because every time that I want to learn the English is more difficult and I always think that I be mistake.

Actually, I must admit that my English is a little best, I know more word and almost understand all the word that say the teacher Claudia, because she speck very fine and is a fluid English but easy to understand. In my opinion the English should not be obligatory, because we are trying to understand for the force. If we could take the English as an elective course would be much more entertaining, because it would not be something imposed.

The blog is very important, because sincerely I write with the word of my vocabulary and every time I check the dictionary under. But exist the disadvantage, the blog we took time away for the other jobs, because we did not make the blog class hourly, but I must also recognize that this time too is valuable for the finish the blog.

Good, without more that I say, we know all the extra effort that you have placed in us, thank you very much Claudia.

Good bye.

universal biosafety mesures... 22/06/2010

Hello!!!

Today, I am goning to talk about the universal biosafety mesures, because is a topic very interesting for me and it is my topic in the work for Introductions to the living agents of the disease!!!

well, the biosafety is the level of the biocontainment precautions required to isolate dangerous biological agents in an enclosed facility. The levels of containment range from the lowest biosafety level 1 to the highest at level 4.
Levels

Biosafety level 1
This level is suitable for work involving well-characterized agents not known to consistently cause disease in healthy adult humans, and of minimal potential hazard to laboratory personnel and the environment. It includes several kinds of bacteria and viruses including canine hepatitis, non-pathogenic Escherichia coli, as well as some cell cultures and non-infectious bacteria. At this level precautions against the biohazardous materials in question are minimal, most likely involving gloves and some sort of facial protection.

Biosafety level 2
This level is similar to Biosafety Level 1 and is suitable for work involving agents of moderate potential hazard to personnel and the environment. It includes various bacteria and viruses that cause only mild disease to humans, or are difficult to contract via aerosol in a lab setting

Biosafety level 3
This level is applicable to clinical, diagnostic, teaching, research, or production facilities in which work is done with indigenous or exotic agents which may cause serious or potentially lethal disease after inhalation.

Biosafety level 4
This level is required for work with dangerous and exotic agents that pose a high individual risk of aerosol-transmitted laboratory infections, agents which cause severe to fatal disease in humans for which vaccines or other treatments are not available.

Well, this is the Universal Biosafety Mesures and is very important for the manipulation of the injurious agents for the health.

Good Bye.

my favourite music group!!!!...16/06/2010

Hello!!!

Today I speak about my favourite music group!!

My favourite music is the metal because this music relaxes me. When I was an adolescent, I listened to music romantic, because this music is very sad and I always was sad for this. Then in my life appeared the metal. This is a music very energetic, because produce that the people themselves fell free.

My favorite band is Metallica, because they sing songs talk about everyday realities that humanity lives, such as injustice, terrorism and others topics.

Metallica has 10 albums, which are: Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets,... And Justice for All, Metallica (black álbum), Load, ReLoad, St. Anger and Death Magnetic. My albums favorites are: Master of Puppets, ... And Justice for All and Death Magnetic. Lyrical themes explored included religious and military leaders, rage, insanity, monsters, drugs, anger, loss, and retribution. These issues show that the world is in decadence and that the realities are becoming more sad and cruel.

Metallica has many songs which I like much, but I love the most are:
One, whisky in the jar, sad but true, unforgiven (1,2 and 3), nothing else matters and the day that never comes.

The day that never comes is a song very interesting, because the lyrics of the song is interpreted as the things that should happen, but never reach. This is best understood in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-UzaZjSNd8. The letters is:
Born to push you around
You better just stay down
You pull away
He hits the flesh
You hit the ground
Mouths so full of lies
Tend to black your eyes
Just keep them closed
Keep praying
Just keep waiting

Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up and feel the warmth
but the sunshine never comes
No the sunshine never comes

Push you cross that line
Just stay down this time
Hide in yourself
Crawl in yourself
You'll have your time
God I'll make them pay
Take it back one day
I'll end this day
I'll splatter color on this gray

Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up and feel the warmth
but the sunshine never comes
No the sunshine never comes

Love is a four letter word
And never spoken here
Love is a four letter word
Here in this prison
I suffer this no longer
I put it into
This I swear!
This I swear!
The sun will shine
This I swear!
This I swear!
This I swear!

Well, I know that my post is very long, but I don’t know as explain my passion for this music group.

I love Metallica and I just want to meet them.

That’s all for today.

See you next time

Education and prevention in health... 09/06/2010

Hi!!!
Today, I am going to talk about education and prevention in health, from my point of view, in my future as a midwife.
1. Why prevention is important?

The prevention is important because the people need know all about health, because of this form the society is inform of the diseases more common and the risk, that producing the cancer or tumours and inclusive the death, like the uterine cervix cancer (Human Papiloma Virus) or breast cancer, or fulminant hepatitis C (HCV); or others topics like the familiar planning, miscarriage or premenstrual syndrome.

2. How to prevent at the individual, family and community level?

First that all, to prevent it is necessary to look for the people correct like to do groups with kids, adolescent, adult and people old.

In the individual prevent we should begin to create public interest topics, like for example topics of sexuality, but all through a previous survey, to view the topics of interest.
For the family we can make councils involving parents, so that they are responsible to educate their children, this will lead to greater trust between parent and child.
For the communities we should organize groups, make speeches and advertisements to call the attention of the people who see it, Incentives to attend meetings on prevention.

3. What can midwives do to promote prevention?

We as health professionals obstetricians, we are mainly involved in the care of pregnant women in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases in adolescent pregnancy prevention or unwanted pregnancy, climacteric and menopause y and education in various diseases, so people are aware of them.

Well, I think that our participation is very important, because the people in special the women need to know all about this topics, for that they can prevent and cure not.

That’s all,

See us next week.

Is only a matter of gender?... 03/06/2010

What are the benefits for a man to be a midwife, what are the drawbacks?

In men the work like midwife is very important because this way is internalized with the problems facing a woman, from her point of view and thus can understand everything them, by getting in and place of women and seeing all the man differences processes by which they pass.
I think that the inconvenient is in that many women do not like to be treated by a man, because he feels uncomfortable and unreliable.

Do you think gender issues also affect other health professionals?

I think the problem mainly affects gender in the case of midwives, since it is centralized in women, whereas in the other area of health professional attentions are widespread.

What do you think you can do to reduce gender problems in your career?

I think that must be shown that both men and women have the same abilities to do the work of midwives. I have heard cases where women feel much more comfortable temple attended by a man by a woman because they say that man is more delicate to treat them, because he does not experience pain or sensations felt by the woman.

Do you know or think gender issues among health workers are similar in other countries?
I do not know, but I think it depends on exactly where we are talking, and sociocultural aspects of each site, but overall I think it does not occur as well as in Chile.

My future as a health professional... 27/05/2010

Hello, hope you are all well.

Today, I going to talk about how my future once I will finish my studies.
Frist of all, the first that I do with the term of my career, I will cancel the debts that have with the state of Chile, xD...!!

Later I get married with my boyfriend, his name is Carlos. He study medicine at the medine faculty of the University of Chile, where until now we have the same interest and hope it continues. If I finish my studies and I have not boy friend, I maybe spend traveling from around the worldor the same contry. I do not want to haver childrens, but possibly I thikn have a child in years to come.

When I begin to work, I intend to start public or private hospitals, but always on the urgency, I woudl like to take turns, because I have that to use my youth, because after 30 years, the body is tired and overwhelmed. Then when I stop to do tunrs, I intend to stard working in rural hospitals or in places were more hepl is needed, because my interest has always been to help to the people without sufficient resources or simple the distance of the city keeps isolated. With this I will have esperience in different workplaces, so that in this way to th end of my working I can finish my years in a consulting room of the health and a quiet life.

Basically, I´m not very fond of births, it is not my area of interest
in the 100%, as already mentioned en previous blog, I want to focus primarily on women´s health beyound the gestation period, if not before, during and after the whole process through the implementation of contraceptive methods, prevention of STIs (Transmitting sexual infections), as it very important to see all these points, because we avoid unguanted pregnancies and diseases, congenital melformations in the petus, among many other things and so would be helping the mother and baby.
I thikn that would be my main contribution, for now these are my projects and I hope can be met if God lest me.
Thanks for reading my blog again, see you at the next meeting.
Kisses for you.
María José Rodríguez Carozzi, future midwife.

Why I decided to study Obstetrics?... 23/05/2010

When I was about to enter of the University, I had my eye on destistry, but the score in the university selection test was not very high. Between my opsion, I had the Profession of Midwifery.

At first, I did not know it was, then for this reason, I wanted to study midwifery.

Then, I discoveres the important work of midwives and how beautiful their work.

Now, I think this is right for me, because one of the areas that I liked in the lives of humans beings, is the reproduction and sexual transmitted infections. Therefore, is in those areas where I want to focus as a future midwife also include adolescent presnancy as one of my biggest concerns.

One of the things taht shaped my vision of the work of midwives, was a trip I made to the community Lolol sixth region of Chile, where I went to do volunteer work. Here I met other students of obstetrics, somo third and fifth year. They taught me many new things, or in fact unknown to me.

Among them I met Nicole and Sebastian, both fifth year students. I showed the work of midwives, but it makes me part of thir shares or playing with them every one of the things done in the care of a board of midwifery. They taught me to do physical breast exam, taking PAP Tets, to draw blood to babies, to realize vaginal touch examination, among other things.

Now, they are my friends and every time I do not understand something, ask them to be 100% safe and do everythig right.

Today, I am in love with my future career as a midwife, and just want to work hard to become a professional and therefore help to women and and also for future students who may need help and knowledge.

One of my favotite website!!!... 04/05/2010

Well it is one of the pages that I like to review, because on this page is always reporting health and news.

This site has many sections like information on the website, information to the public visiting the site, health topics, protection of health and institutions that ralate to the page.

The main features of this page is provide information to the people of the events that are happening today to healthof this country, such as news, new projects like the constructions of new hospitals or repair of these, new plans of care or new measures to be undertaken in regions, in addition new ideas and strategies to prevent diseases, such as vaccibation, among other things.

I visit this page very often, beacuse I am very interesting in to know about the changes and advances in health, but also the problem that have emerged in recent days as the birth a girl en the bathroom at San José Hospital.

I like website, because here you are actually things are not hidden anything and the public.

My experience whit the Earthquake... 20/04/2010

Well, I have a little fear to the quakes.

The day 27 of february of this year, I was in the house of my granmother, because only I haved a days more the vacations. in the night I went to sleep, but I could not.

Then to the 3:34 hours, the eart began to move.

I was a little afraid, because the movemment increasingly strong. In this momnet I wanted only to run, but my granmother calmed me, because I before have never lived an earquake. I think that if I had been alone, maybe I might not tell this history.

To the other day, I only wanted to return to my home, because I needed to see my parents. I came to my home on Sunday, in the afthernoon. All the persons were in the street conversing, because the light had beed cut.

During many days after the eartquake, I could not sleep, because I was dreaming that the floor would tremble again.

I believe that I do not have to react this way, because as future matron, I should be calmer.

For example, if I was in a delivery and began to temble. I only should protect the mom and her baby, for that it does not happen to them not badly at all.

Since today I will try not to be afraid and I will think much before doing something, because it is not the best solution to go out running...
